Webinars or Teleseminar? Which is better?

Lately I’ve seen a few events posted both webinars and teleseminars. It’s the same event, held at the same time. Participants can either log in via their computer and “watch” the webinar or call in on a phone and listen to the teleseminar.

Some speakers and experts who are used to doing teleseminars seem to think that they can double-up and have a both a webinar and a teleseminar a the same time! Sounds great in theory.

The problem is that these are two drastically different types of events. Or at least they should be.

Old telephoneTeleseminars

  • Made popular in the 1980s and 1990s.
  • Speakers must rely on excellent vocal delivery, much like a radio announcer.
  • The speaker is an expert.
  • No slides or other visuals are generally needed.
  • Often, the speaker will simply talk for the entire length of the teleseminar. Some questions may happen at the end.
  • These calls often involved a lot of “hype”. I’ve been in teleseminars that are 80% hype and 20% content.
  • Follow the “sage on the stage” model where the speaker expects 100% of the audience’s attention.

Webinars

  • Becoming increasingly popular in the 21st century.
  • Speakers must rely on excellent vocal delivery, much like a radio announcer.
  • The speaker is an expert.
  • Participants demand solid content. Unlike some teleseminars, webinars require at least 80% solid, valuable content.
  • Engaging visuals are part of the experience. It is not uncommon for a truly exceptional webinar producer to put 4 or more hours into the visuals for a one-hour webinar. Visuals can include slides, info graphics, videos, live application demos, screen sharing or anything else that creates interest and engagement. Visuals are a core part of the webinar experience. A dry deck of Powerpoint slides just doesn’t cut it.
  • The speaker expects and appreciates questions throughout the session. It is not uncommon for participants to be engaging in live chat… They are included in the experience… not just spectators.
  • Today’s webinar experts recognize that their participants can – and will – check out at a moment’s notice if what they’re talking about isn’t 100% engaging.

Woman at laptopWebinars and teleseminars are based on two very different starting points or philosophical bases, if you will. Teleseminars rely 100% on auditory input on the part of the presenter… and 100% of auditory input on the part of the listener. Webinars incorporate auditory, visual and interactive learning, all at the same time.

To me, a teleseminar is akin to the old radio programs of the 1940s and 1950s. People would gather around their radios anxiously awaiting the next episode of their favorite radio program. The experience involved the auditory input as well as their own imaginations, to make it come alive.

Then, in 1950s and 1960s, people began to buy TVs. Their entertainment experience suddenly included both audio and visual input, right from their own home. They didn’t have to go to a cinema to see a “moving picture”.

TV changed everything. While radio lives on, people don’t gather around their radios the way at the time their favorite program started the way they used to many decades ago. Now people flip on the radio to add background music while they’re doing another activity, say driving, working or cleaning the house.

But people still sit down in front of their TVs, either at a specific time, or at a time they choose, because their program has been recorded, and enjoy the visual and audio experience known as television programming.

Webinars are more like that… People expect high quality visuals integrated with a fantastic audio program. They like the idea of it being scheduled at a particular time so they can tune in live if they choose. AND they want to know it can be recorded so they can enjoy it when they want to, on their terms… and even watch it again if they want. People today expect – even demand – to be entertained, informed, educated, challenged and above all else, engaged… They want choice and they want to be involved… They want to chat, respond and have their say.

Teleseminars don’t allow for much of that.

Like the old radio programs, teleseminars will likely diminish in popularity over the next decade or so… but may retain a small loyal following.

More and more, people will start to favour webinars over teleseminars and never look back.

Whatever you do, don’t insult your audience by thinking they’re one in the same. It’d like watching a TV show with your eyes closed.

How Literacy Programs Can use Webinars to Benefit Learners, Staff & Volunteers

I spent many years working in the educational and non-profit sectors and a language teacher and literacy advocate. Literacy remains one of my passions.

More and more literacy organizations are adding a component of e-learning to their programs. It’s the 21st century way to learn!

Webinars are relatively easy to put on. Some of the language is a bit different from face-to-face environments, so it’s helpful to know that instructors, facilitators and teachers are mostly referred to as “presenters” in the webinar environment. Learners and clients are generally called “participants”.

Both presenters and participants need some technology and computer literacy in order to take part in a webinar. Current teachers and facilitators may require some training before moving into an e-learning environment. Your participants may benefit from an orientation prior to the content to familiarize them with how webinars work.

Assuming that both parties have the technology literacy to move forward, here are some ideas on how you can make the most of webinar technology in your organization.

For Participants

Online group classes

Bring participants together in an e-learning class not only to teach them new content and skills, but also to learn how to work together in an online environment. You can build two of the Essential Skills at once: Computer Use and Working with Others.

Online tutoring

Do you have learners in rural and remote areas? Or single parents who find it hard to get a sitter? Online tutoring provides a way for otherwise isolated learners to connect with tutors from the comfort and convenience of their own home. This is a super way to reach out to people who might otherwise not engage with learning.

Information sessions

If you offer information sessions about your programs in a live setting (your office space, a public library or elsewhere), you can adapt your content and host virtual information sessions. Information sessions are for prospective students and have a slight marketing component. A word of caution though… don’t try to “sell” in a webinar. Instead, demonstrate your expertise and what makes you unique.

Orientation sessions

When you bring new learners into your physical space, do you give them an orientation on what to expect and how things work there? Photos, maps, and other materials can also be used in an online environment to give a virtual orientation. Though I’m a big fan of doing live webinars, this is one that you could record and use over again.

Follow-up workshops

Webinars are a great way to keep relationships going once the opportunity for face-to-face interaction has passed. A value-added webinar one month after the course ends is a super way to stay connected. For example, if you have a work placement component in any of your programs, you can incorporate virtual sessions after work hours. Learners can share stories about their work experience and learn from one another. In cases where participants already know one another, the online interaction is usually fun and very dynamic.

For staff and volunteers

Volunteer information sessions

Do you like the idea of having virtual teachers or tutors? Then set the stage by offering online information sessions for prospective teachers and volunteers about your organization. Review the programs that you offer, the opportunities you and the benefits of working with your organization. This is a great time to have current staff members and volunteer tutors chime in with what they love about working with you!

Volunteer training

Do you train your staff in intensive sessions that jam in loads of information? You can break it up into a series of online training workshops. The material is easier to absorb if you divide it into “chunks”. If you have ongoing workshops, your volunteers get ongoing training, which keeps building their skills. As an organization, ongoing training for them means you give offering them something back for their time and expertise.

Staff development workshops

Do your staff currently get all their professional development at an annual conference? I love conferences because of the chance to connect with old friends. But wouldn’t it be great to offer ongoing training and development for your staff throughout the year? The cool thing about this is that you don’t have to organize all the sessions yourself. Check out the Centre for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC). They specialize in offering online PD for educators. They have literally hundreds of programs to choose from, ranging from free to expensive.

For the community

A Virtual Open House

Share what you do with the community, your stakeholders and donors through a virtual open house. Include photos of your facilities and your staff. A video that uses digital storytelling to celebrate the success of your learners makes it even more dynamic.

These are just a few ideas for literacy and language programs to use webinars in their organizations. I’m a big fan of using this technology in the non-profit and educational sectors. It offers a lot of value for everyone – staff, volunteers, learners and students, as well as community stake holders. How many non-profits still lag behind when it comes to their own technology literacy? Implementing the use of webinars positions your organization as a leader in terms of technology. You lead by example, showing others how virtual and online learning is an important part of 21st century of education and professional capacity building.

Anxious about technology? The cure is curiosity!

While “curiosity may have killed the cat”, as the saying goes, it certainly livens up our learning – especially when it comes to technology. Ever thought of how anxiety blocks our desire to learn and curiosity heightens it?

Think of anxiety and curiosity as being at two ends of a continuum.

When anxiety levels are high, our receptiveness to learning new things is low. We resist because we are full of panic and doubt.

At the other end of the spectrum from anxiety is intense curiosity. When curiosity levels are high, we are incredibly receptive to learning new things because we are motivated by our own hunger to learn.

Here’s a diagram to show what I mean.

Someone who is curious learns more. A person who is highly anxious when it comes to technology is unlikely to embrace webinars or virtual training sessions with ease. Learn to have fun with technology. Play. Experiment. Enjoy it.

Keep providing strategies to decrease anxiety. At the same time, encourage their natural curosity and you’ll keep people learning. It’s that simple.

Are webinars right for you?

The same way that not all speakers are keynoters and not all facilitators are speaker, not all trainers, educators, speakers or facilitators may be excellent webinar presenters.  Are webinars right for you? Ask yourself these questions:

•    Do I have a program that is easily delivered in 60-90 minutes or that can be divided up into that time frame?
•    Am I proficient with technology?
•    Am I willing to invest the time it takes to learn how to become an excellent virtual presenter?

If you answered “yes” to all these questions, you may be ready to start delivering your content to audiences in a webinar format. If not, don’t worry. Content can be developed and technology can be learned.
